What happens after you apply

Applying does not commit you to anything. This page explains what we do with your application, roughly in the order it happens, so you know what to expect and when to contact us.

The five steps

1

You send us your application

You can apply online, or print the form and post it to us. Both routes reach the same team and the same free assessment. Nothing is decided at this stage and you are not committing to anything.

2

We read what you have sent

A member of the team reads your application and works out whether we are the right people to help. We look at what the problem is, whether there is a deadline coming up, and whether it is the kind of work we can take on.

3

We may ask you for more information

If something is missing we will contact you, usually by phone or email. You do not need to have every document ready before you apply. If you are not sure what we need, ask us and we will explain.

4

We explain the next steps

If we can help, we will explain what we can do, who will handle your matter and the basis on which we can act, including any costs. We will confirm the arrangement with you before we begin work. If we cannot help, we will tell you and, where we can, suggest another source of support.

5

We keep you updated

If we agree to act for you, we will explain how we will keep you informed and how to reach the person handling your matter. If you have received a client care letter and need an update, use the update request below.

What to have ready

There is no need to wait until you have all of this. Send what you have and we will ask for the rest if we need it. This list is simply what helps us move faster.

  • Your name, address, telephone number and email address
  • What the problem is, in your own words
  • Any deadline or court, tribunal or hearing date you have been given
  • Reference numbers from letters you have received
  • Any letters, emails, forms or court papers you already have
  • If your application is about benefits, debts or housing, any figures or statements you have to hand
  • Anyone who is helping you, such as a support worker, carer or family member
  • Whether you need anything adapted for you, such as a larger print, an interpreter or a paper form

How to apply

The online form is the quickest route. If you cannot use it, the paper route is fully open to you and we will help you complete it.

How to reach us

If your matter is urgent, please ring. Our out-of-hours line is answered 24 hours a day, every day.

Already a client? Ask for an update

For existing clients whose application has been accepted and who have received a client care letter. In the contact form, include your name and the case registration number from your letter, if you have one. If you do not have a number, just give your name.

Could I please have an update?

How long it takes

We will review the information you send and contact you about the next step. How long that takes depends on the application and the work involved. If you have a deadline, tell us about it when you apply so we can take it into account.

If we cannot help

We are a small team and we cannot take on everything. If we cannot help, we will tell you as soon as we know, and where we are able to, we will point you towards another organisation that can. We would rather say no quickly than leave you waiting.

We handle personal information in line with our Privacy Notice. It explains how information is used and your rights. You can read the full detail on our Privacy Notice, and you can ask us any question about it before you apply.
